Airstream Rangeline Touring Coach: A Ram ProMaster–Based Camper Van

We've said it a thousand times, and we'll say it again: the Class B camper van segment is hot, hot, hot—with no signs of cooling off. Airstream's iconic "silver bullet" luxury aluminum travel trailers may snatch the spotlight, but the company has been in the Class B van market since the late '80s and has been building Mercedes-Benz Sprinter camper vans exclusively since 2004. If you're wondering what Class B entails, here it is: Class B motorhomes outfit the existing body of a commercial van supplied by an outside manufacturer.

Currently Airstream offers a few varieties of its Class B Sprinter vans that you'll probably notice on the highway now that we've mentioned it: Atlas and Interstate (24X, 24GL, 24GT, and 19). Taking advantage of the hot market, Airstream is now expanding its Class B camper van lineup to include the Rangeline Touring Coach, built on the newest model-year Ram ProMaster 3500 chassis.

Whereas Airstream's Sprinter van builds are diesel-powered with optional four-wheel drive, the ProMaster will be powered by Chrysler's 280-hp, 260-lb-ft 3.6-liter Pentastar gas V-6 backed by a nine-speed automatic transmission. As there is no four-wheel drive ProMaster, it's front-wheel drive only. The nearly 21-foot ProMaster can tow up to 3,500 pounds. Airstream sees the car-like, maneuverable ProMaster as befitting for day use and short-haul weekend adventures for small families. It's #vanlife, but maybe not sell-the-house, travel-the-world van life.

Although not lacking in content by any means, the Rangeline could be considered Airstream's entry-level, economical Class B. First, the ProMaster (pre-camper-upfit) is much more affordable than the Sprinter. Second, simplified features like fixed entry steps and a manual awning help keep the price low. Relatively low. Well, you know what we mean. Whereas the Sprinter Interstate starts around $200,000, the Rangeline starts at $131,882. Adding a pop-top adds $11,694. That's a hefty price tag, but considering the Class B camper van market can demand supercar money, it feels like a downright deal. And you get the Airstream badge, a definite bragging right in any campsite.

The Airstream Rangeline ProMaster holds 28 gallons of fresh water, 19 gallons of grey water, and 12 gallons of black water. Its RV bits are present but hidden: the water hookups are concealed in an external driver-side compartment covered by a magnetized swing door, and the sewer and electric hookups are tucked away and out of sight.

Interestingly, there is no propane tank onboard the Rangeline. The 3.2-cu.-ft. refrigerator, 0.4-cu.-ft. freezer, and stowable 1,000-watt single-burner induction stovetop are electric. There's a 2.8-kW gas generator that sips gas from the ProMaster's 24-gallon gas tank. The generator powers the 13,500-BTU air conditioner and can kick on when needed. Heater and water heater duties are handled by a Timberline 2.0 gas-fired hydronic heating system, meaning that like the generator, the system gets fuel (gasoline) from the ProMaster's primary gas tank. The Rangeline has a 270-Ah Battle Born Batteries Gamechanger lithium battery and a 2,000-watt power inverter. There also is a 200-watt solar panel. Besides a separate water heater monitor, a single touchscreen monitor keeps all systems in-check. There's a smartphone app for it, too.

The inside of the Airstream Rangeline has everything travelers need for comfort. A nice entrance hand rail doubles as a towel rack. Upon entry, one sees a fixed forward-facing bench seat with seatbelts for two (ideally, children who don't hate each other). In front of that bench is a removable flex table system with an expandable, swiveling section, allowing it to reach the front passenger swiveling captain chair. To the left, along the passenger-side wall, is the kitchen area with countertop, sink, storage cubbies, microwave, and fridge. A bamboo sink cover doubles as a cutting board. Across from that is the wet bath with a sink, shower, and toilet.

The rear features a two-piece fold-down bed system providing a 74-by-52.25-inch sleeping area; it sits high enough to allow to retain storage underneath. Integrated floor L-tracks and MOLLE panels on the rear doors allow for additional storage of recreational and outdoor gear. Motion detection lights in the rear and redundant pad switches help keep shenanigans out of the dark..

Airstream knows adventure-seekers tend to be dog-lovers. There's a leash holder on the passenger-side running board and integrated pull-out dog bowls under the fridge. Just for fun, the fridge features a dry-erase surface, and there's a portable JBL speaker mounted under some overhead storage cabinets at the front.

The Airstream Rangeline comes in two shades of exterior gray: Granite Crystal Metallic and Bright Silver Metallic. Two interior decors, Moonstone Grey and Admiral Navy, differ mainly in the surround colors of the captain chairs and bench seats. "Lizard skin" insulation throughout provides good sound dampening. The aluminum roof (this is Airstream, after all) doesn't hold odors, is easy to clean, and lasts compared to fabric-covered ceilings.

Look for the Ram ProMaster-derived Class B camper van Airstream Rangeline Touring Coach at the 53rd Annual America's Largest RV Show in Hershey, Pennsylvania, September 14-18, 2022. When you see a ProMaster sporting an Airstream badge, know that you're not going crazy.
