Blue Springs assembly is not increasing prices on fireworks it sells as a fundraiser.
You'll soon start to see firework tents popping up across the metro, but your Fourth of July celebration might cost you more this year. Wholesale fireworks prices are up, but KMBC 9 found out why a church in Blue Springs, that uses fireworks as a fundraiser, is taking a hit to keep prices down.
Inflation is shooting up wholesale firework prices at a time when everything seems to cost more.
“We realize that families are paying more for gas, they’re paying more for utilities, more for food,” said Pastor John Martz, lead pastor at Blue Springs Assembly.
That’s why he says his church won't pass the 15 to 20% price hike on to customers at the two fireworks tents they use as a fundraiser.
“We want them to have a great celebration on the Fourth of July,” he said, “and if they can buy the same fireworks they did last year for the same price, we think that'll help.”
The church has sold fireworks for 30 years to help fund its ministries and community outreach. It brings in anywhere from $30,000 to $70,000. Martz knows keeping prices low will cut into that profit.
“It will affect us. We don't know how much, of course, it's based always on sales,” he said. “We do have more product this year to try to offset some of that.”
He says although they might make less money, it will help families keep more.
“We're not in the money business. We want to make sure what we're doing is right because we're in the people business,” he said, “and this is the right thing to do, so that's why we chose to do it.”
The church’s stand at U.S. 40 Highway and S. Bowlin opens this Friday, June 24 at noon. The stand off Highway 7 outside Orscheln will be open July 1 through 4. Both stands will be open daily from 8 a.m. until 11 p.m.
