Get Out!: World's Biggest Fish Fry, Safari Park Drive-in, Sidewalk Prophets highlight busy weekend

Rural West Tennessee’s festival season kicks off this weekend in Henry County as the 69th annual World’s Biggest Fish Fry gets started on Saturday in Henry County.

Saturday’s schedule starts with the Hushpuppy Dash 5k at 8 a.m. (7 a.m. registration) at the Henry County Fairgrounds, a car show at 11 a.m. at Sweet Jordan’s and a demolition derby at the fairgrounds at 7 p.m.

Monday will have a street dance from 7-9 p.m. in Downtown Paris.

The fairgrounds will host a country dance from 7-10 p.m. on Tuesday, and the carnival also arrives on Tuesday starting at 5 p.m until 11 p.m., 11 a.m.-midnight Wednesday through Saturday and 1-6 p.m. on May 1.

The fish tent with all you can eat fish will open at 5 p.m. on Wednesday until 9 p.m. The tent will be open Thursday through Saturday from 11 a.m. until 9 p.m. There will be a Christian concert at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

There will be arts and crafts at the fairgrounds Thursday through Saturday until 8:30 p.m. They open at 5 p.m. on Thursday and 10 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Brandon Lee will be in concert on Thursday at the Fairgrounds.

The festival’s grand parade will start at 10 a.m. on Friday, and Rodeo, Bulls and Barrels will be there at 7:30 p.m on Friday and Saturday.

The Small Fry Parade will be Saturday at 10 a.m., followed by the Bill Williams Catfish Races at 11 a.m. in Downtown Paris. The Junior Fishing Rodeo will also start at 11 a.m. on William’s Lake.

Here’s a rundown of other things going on around Jackson and West Tennessee this weekend:

Safari Park Drive-In Theater: The drive-in theater returns to the Safari Park in Alamo (618 Conley Road) this weekend with a showing of the 1980s classic, “Dirty Dancing.” Gates open at 6:30 p.m. with the movie starting at 7:30. Adult tickets are $12 and children 2-12 years old get in for $10. Full concessions are available.

Walk to Make Alzheimer’s a Memory: The inaugural event coordinated by Alzheimer’s Tennessee is set to start at 8 a.m. at The AMP (91 New Market Street in Downtown Jackson). Join them for music, food and fun for all ages. Pets are welcome, especially wearing purple. Start your team to support West Tennessee families living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia. Earth Day Festival and 5K: Fairgrounds Park (800 South Highland Avenue in Downtown Jackson) will be the place for the City of Jackson’s Earth Day Festival starting with the 5k at 7 a.m.  The event will have a drive-thru recycling drop-off for a variety of items like cardboard, paper, glass, and electronics. Activities for the festival will include a tree giveaway, inflatable obstacle course, scavenger hunt, face painting, balloon animals, and more. The City of Jackson, TN Fire Department will also be on-site with their gaming truck. Educational booths and other vendors will include the Jackson-Madison 200 Bicentennial Committee; City of Jackson, TN Mayor’s Youth Council will be on-site to sign up volunteers for Trash-4-Cash, Master Gardeners, Tree Board, Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation, Love Your Block – Jackson, TN, and more.

Poetry Open Mic: The Griot Collective of West Tennessee and Light Trap Books are hosting a poetry open mic from 1-3 p.m. at theLOCAL (202 West Lafayette in Downtown Jackson). It is free and open to the public. A sign-up sheet is available at Light Trap Books for those interested in reading original works of poetry or favorite poems. There will be live music and a food truck on site as well.

Sidewalk Prophets concert: Dove Award-winning Christian contemporary band Sidewalk Prophets are coming to Henderson and Williams Auditorium (634 East Main Street) for a concert at 7 p.m. Tickets are still available starting at $22, $29 for early entry devotional with the band and VIP $55.
