The festival will run the afternoon of May 7, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The 11th Annual Secaucus Green Festival for 2022 is set to take place at the Secaucus Xchange at 2000 Riverside Station Boulevard on May 7 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The event is intended as a celebration of the plant, featuring environmentally conscious vendors, exhibits, and fun activities for all, particularly the first annual native plant sale. Admission is free, and food and eco-friendly products will be available for purchase.
There will be presentations in the Presenter Tent on varying environmental topics. A Touch of Nature will talk about amazing animals from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tenafly Nature Center will present on endangered species in New Jersey from 1 to 2:15 p.m., and Tutu Goes Green and Eco the Elephant will be read by the authors during a literature period from 2:45 to 4 p.m. Additionally, there will be “walk arounds” featuring Andean flute music and The Grand Falloons.
Hackensack Riverkeeper eco-cruise sign-ups will be located at the Laurel Hill County Park boat launch. The eco-cruises will be half-hour trips with times at 12, 1, 2, and 3 p.m. for ages four and up.
Kids yoga classes will run from 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m., 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., and 12:30 to 1 p.m. The yoga is described as “super-fun” and inspired by nature, open to all abilities for those ages three and up. Bring your own mat.
GreenDrop will hold a donation drive at the Green Festival from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. They are collecting bagged or boxed gently used clothing, shoes, toys, sports equipment, and household items to the GreenDrop truck located at the library parking lot on 1007 Riverside Station Boulevard.
Townwide shuttle buses will run from 10:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., from the Recreation Center, the North End Firehouse, the Library, the Elms, Harmon Cove, Harmon Cove Towers, Kroll Heights, Impreveduto Towers. The buses will drop riders off at the Green Festival at the Xchange.
Native plant sale this year
A major part of this year’s Green Festival is the inaugural native plant sale by the Native Plant Society of New Jersey (NPSNJ) Hudson County Chapter, started last summer by Co-Leaders Kim Correro, Lorraine Freeney and Dawn Giambalvo.
“This is a native plant sale for this area,” Correro told the Hudson Reporter. “It’s inaugural and it’s a really big deal. ”
According to Corerro, the plants will be provided by Gino’s Nursery.
“Gino’s Nursery grows 75 percent of plants on the property,” Correro said. “They only sell native plants and they don’t use any harmful chemicals. Their mission is to help get native plants from our area back into the local ecosystems, whether that means a backyard or a park, one plant at a time.”
Correro noted how Gino’s is offering the usually pricier native plants at wholesale prices, because the sale is not about making money but allowing more access to them to the public
“The public is going to get an opportunity to purchase them very inexpensively,” Correro said. “The Secaucus Environmental Department wants to keep these plants very accessible. And that’s really unusual. So we’re happy to be a part of that.”
According to Correro, there aren’t many nurseries for native plants nearby meaning that the sale is also providing physical access to the native plants as well.
“We’re going to have an assortment of shrubs, including something called the Downy Serviceberry which is the native plant society’s plant of the year this year,” Correro said. “They’re going to be a really reasonable price and we’re only going to have ten of them.”
In addition to Downy Serviceberry, there will be over 75 other species of native plants to choose from.
“This is going to be a great opportunity for people to go home with native plants at a very reasonable price,” Correro said. For more information, go to green.secaucusnj.gov.
