Porsche's latest option lets their customers explore the great outdoors with this branded roof tent that perfectly fits on a 911, 718 or its SUVs.
The genius Porsche engineers over a Stuttgart have found yet one more way to extract money from their customer's pockets. The sports car brand found infamy with its options list. Most notably, the rear windshield wiper costs a few hundred dollars on nearly $100,000 cars. If you can think of it there's a way to spend money on it for your Porsche. Colored seatbelts, stitching, exterior text, engravings, and a plethora of wheels, are all the most basic options on the list. But for a long time, Porsche has missed emerging trends online. Experiencing a recent explosion in popularity, the overland movement usually sees 4x4s converted into essentially mobile homes. Somewhat popularly, the original Cayenne model underwent this treatment.
Jealous of this lost potential revenue Porsche now introduce an overland style roof tent for their most beloved model, the 911. According to Porsche, "practical adventure equipment transforms the sports car into a hotel room for nature-lovers", encouraging their customers to use their vehicles in whatever way they can Porsche continues to support their customers.

With the bulk of the world's population now living in cities, it's ever more popular to get away from nature. When this desire collides with the competitiveness of social media it gives birth to the overland movement. A subset of the off-road groups of the car community, overland uses heavily modified cars. More often than not these are 4x4s. However, the occasional sports car gets turned into an off-road or dirt track machine.
With rapid popularity more and more people want to use their cars as one-stop, outdoors exploring machines. To do these individuals need plenty of after-market parts. Think lifestyle equipment like kayaks and paddle boards. But also off-road equipment, such as bullbars, winches, and spotlights. Let's not forgot shelter either. These tents are usually roof mounted or built into the bed of a pick-up truck.
Porsche for the longest time has held the status as the usable supercar. More specifically, this title belongs to the Porsche 911 Turbo S. However other models in their range offer this spice while also offering the benefits of the respective class. The roof tent not only supports the 911 but also Macan, Cayenne, Panamera, and Taycan. Cayman and Boxster owners can't use this tent, nor can GT, Cabriolet, or Targa models. The tent fits the supported cars' roof transport systems. Previously these systems have supported roof boxes, ski racks, and the like. In other words, a way of enabling Porsche customers to embrace all aspects of life, further bolstering their credentials as the daily driving supercar and suited to even the harshest of conditions.
Porsche makes it clear that this roof tent will impact the handling characteristics of the model. Most significantly, all vehicles when fitted with this roof tent have a top speed of 130km/h which is roughly 80mph. So customers will have to stick to speed limits with this roof tent mounted. Weighing 56kg, and all of this added to the top of the car this will also surely negatively impact a Porsche's handling. But by no means should this option ruin a road trip as these cars are some of the most capable on the planet.
According to Porsche, back in May, they unveiled a concept for this option. Called the Porsche Travel Experience, Porsche took a couple of travel influencers on scenic road trips with a pre-production orange and gray version of the tent. This came mounted on top of a Porsche Taycan Turismo. Exploring the Black Forest and the Rhine, this tent opens up some of the most rural parts of the world for Porsche owners to explore.

With the ever-increased popularity of overland builds, the Porsche tent has a lot to compete with. The tent features two side windows and a roof window. It's all season and can comfortably house two. So although this may fit the likes of the Macan and Panamera, this may be more suited to 911 buyers. Measuring 210 cm x 130 cm the base of the tent has an integrated mattress, making it quite the compact solution. Like all Porsche products, the tent comes well engineered. With breathable cotton walls, minimal condensation should build overnight. Notably, for Porsche aficionados, the classic Porsche side font comes printed along the side. As standard, the tent offers the same as many conventional tents, including windows that open for ventilation and black-out lining for better sleeping quality.
Available in either black and light gray or black and dark grey customers can find the official Porsche tent that matches their car's aesthetic. This all comes at €4,980 which is just over $5000 and will first reach consumers in November this year. Never satisfied with how many options a customer can specify Porsche Tequipment will continue to offer further overland accessories including an inner tent, heated blanket, and various organizing equipment.
