For much of the last decade, Hollywood veteran Christian Slater has made his primary home neither in Los Angeles nor his native New York, but in Miami’s “fun and funky” Coconut Grove neighborhood. The veteran actor of stage and screen, whose breakout role was in the late 1980s cult favorite film “Heathers,” has decided, however, to part with his longtime home, on a quiet cul-de-sac about a thirty-minute car ride from the scantily clad heart of South Beach, putting it on the market at $3.95 million.
Listed with Liz Hogan and Charles Celesia of Compass, the asking price is a nicely profitable amount over the $2.21 million tax records show Slater paid for the modestly proportioned though hardly inexpensive property in May 2013, six or so months before he and his wife, Brittany Lopez, tied the knot. The couple now have a toddler daughter so perhaps they are looking for more room to stretch out.
Built in 1928 and known as “Villa Dolce far Niente,” the white stucco and red tile roofed Mediterranean is privately sequestered behind wooden gates amid a jungle of tropical plantings. Updated in keeping with original character, the not-quite-3,300-square-foot home offers three bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms, plus a detached poolside cabana with another bath.
A portico entrance on the side of the house opens to wide entrance hall. Wheat-colored narrow-strip hardwood floors and arched doorways lead to a formal dining room done up as a den, a formal sitting room with a fireplace, and a lengthy sun porch furnished as a dining room. A handsome trio of arched French doors open the sunny dining room to the gardens.
Stark white, with granite counters, up-to-date designer appliances and a palm frond chandelier, the marble-floored kitchen includes a breakfast area with built-in dining banquette and a huge walk-in pantry with built-in coffee maker. The service wing is completed by a laundry room and a powder room for guests.
Upstairs, the main bedroom includes a bathroom updated with vintage-style fixtures, while one of the two guest bedrooms leads to a roof terrace nestled in the surrounding treetops. Out back, a brick dining terrace overlooks a simple rectangular swimming pool trimmed in coral stone and carefully clipped shrubbery. Alongside the pool, a striped awning embellishes the guest cottage, which offers a living area, a sleeping alcove and a bathroom complete with steam shower.
Where Slater and family are headed is unknown. If real estate history repeats itself, however, it could be just about anywhere along the east or west coast. Over the years, the now 53-year-old thespian has owned numerous residences across the country, including a waterfront cabin in Maine, a two-bedroom condo in New York’s Hell’s Kitchen, and a 6,500-square-foot traditional in L.A.’s tony Brentwood area.
With half a dozen projects in various stages of production, including the Zoë Kravitz written and directed film “Pussy Island” and the streaming TV miniseries “Fleishman Is in Trouble,” based on the 2019 Taffy Brodesser-Akner debut novel of the same name, Slater’s recent slate of credits include “Dirty John,” “Mr. Robot,” “Dr. Death,” and “Inside Job.”
